Porter, Oklahoma, holds a dark secret-and troublesome dreams plague Tulsa Police Detective, Kenny Elliot, who grew up in the small town. When a bizarre murder catapults Elliot into his past, he's brought face-to-face with the fabric of his nightmares. A shiny necklace dangles from the rearview mirror of the vehicle where Lagayle Zimmerman, the victim, is discovered. Nine years earlier, in Porter, a similar necklace swung from the mirror of a Mustang that harbored the mutilated bodies of Elliot's friends, Jonathan Alexander (Johnnie Boy), and Marcia Barnes. Most of the town believed Elliot killed his classmates, but no arrest was ever made. Risking his job and his sanity, Elliot digs into his past to solve the murders and expose the truth.

I really did want to like this book and was actually enjoying it until halfway in. The plot about why the killer was killing was not the issue, it was the protagonist. The first half had me glued to the pages and then after the aftermath of the car chase it went boom. His Captain not believing it occurred because of no witnesses, but the getaway car rammed two other cars off the road of a crowded highway? Shoot someone in a bar after identifying himself as a detective and walks out planning on not reporting it? I will leave it at that. But I will read the second part of the series. I have read good series that went bad so may this is a bad series that goes good.

Twisted Perception A Detective Elliot Mystery Book 1 edition by Bob Avey Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I had a hard time getting into this book, and I did something I never do and skipped several charts just to get to read the ending. While I didn't like the book I think it has good characters.
Det Elliot isn't your everyday, ordinary police Detective.

Kenny has loads of baggage and yet he still solves the crimes.

His boss doesn't quite know how to take him and seems to worry about him as well. Loads to worry about. Kenny has a past he'd like to forget but no way. It keeps popping up and his special self just doesnt' know how to take it sometimes.

His old buds from Porter haven't changed much. Of course the Police Chief and Nick are still big fans from his high school football days. Loads of questions on those two.

Loads of action and a well written solid story.

I'd recommend this one to anyone who likes things a little offbeat. Great story and a great hero. Well worth the read. Oh yes.
I like to think I understand the authors intent at building a complex and layered plot, but, overall, this work didn't do it for me. I made it through to the end, but sluggishly.
Growing up reading every Perry Mason Mystery, all of James Patterson, and most of Grisham and Coben, my appetite for great mysteries is strong. What a pleasant surprise to be introduced to Bob Avey.

Avey spins a mystery the reader will not want to put down. He sets the stage, introduces a compelling protagonist, and brilliantly plants the clues required to solve these murder mysteries.

The plot is complex, offering the reader a desire to keep on working to see “who don it”. This is a real page turner
I highly recommend this book and author. I just downloaded this second and third books.
This book was very disappointing. It is entirely derivative of other--and far better--writers in the genre. I don't want to accidentally give any spoilers, so I will just say it's full of the kinds of plot and characterization devices that are compelling coming from the pens of good writers (James Lee Burke, Michael Connolly, Lee Child, etc.) but mere clichés when used by others less talented. The prose is pedestrian at best, and the lack of preparation for presumably central developments is irritatingly amateurish. I pushed on to the end of this book just to satisfy my curiosity about whether it all eventually would come together in a convincing way. Alas, it did not.
With all the twists and turns, this book almost lost me several times. I read a lot of mysteries, but usually prefer to stay away from the ones with psychopaths. This book had more than one of those, and I'm still not sure how all the characters related to each other. I usually enjoy books that lead me into reading the entire series. I don't think I'll be reading more of this one.
WOW! I just read this and was totally impressed with Bob and his ability to write a book of this quality. I, actually, know Bob personally and have talked to him on a personal basis you know your basic conversation type stuff. I have always wondered how someone could come up with the ability to imagine the things that they write about let alone having the ability to put it in writing and come up with the details that they do. Bob has done a superb job in doing this. This book is hard to put down once you start reading it. The ending was quite a surprise but actually made sense once you thought about all of the events taking place up to this time. This book was so good that I am going to order Bob's other two books. Also, I have read all but one of John Sandford's books and this one is in comparison to those.
Bob, you did a super job keep it up.
